Toronto ad fish 🤠 I’ve spent most of my career working as a copywriter in London (6 years here, 2 years Toronto) and the market is pretty different here. I’m planning on moving back home but wondered….how do you find work in Toronto? Agencies barely post openings, is the recruiter scene strong? Is it mostly who you know?
How many hours a week do you ACTUALLY work?

Nothing like low salaries and a high cost of living. Go Vancouver!
I don't disagree. But that's just the ad industry there. Hard to justify higher salaries when there isn't enough agency demand, lower production spend, and less integrated campaign work.
I always tell creatives there to go brand side into gaming or tech. You can pull CD money just being a senior creative in that market.
Otherwise if you can make it work, like you have a spouse pulling in a similar salary, you can't beat the city and the work/life balance.
Half of Vancouver’s pay is work/life balance. I was working late-ish here and our Vancouver office was like sorry we need to figure this out another time it’s 6pm and I need to go home (pre-COVID too). Honestly good for them but just sucked at the moment for me haha
So you have more free time to, what? Enjoy your life living in a van down by the river? At the end of the day, you have to pay your astronomical Vancouver rent. Doesn’t balance out to me.
Vancouver pays quite a bit lower. There’s less competition.
That’s insulting. What happened to this industry? I was making that as a Sr 10 years ago. (Different market, but still)
I worked in Vancouver. Left 6 years ago. It's well known in the industry that salaries are typically lower or low in that market for creatives. I currently have an ACD friend there pulling 120K who got promoted to CD. He got a title bump but not a salary raise.
When I interviewed for ACD roles there, the range was between 100-120K. On the flip side, you get a better work/life balance in that market.
Unless I don't know something, I'd say 140-145K for a newbie CD in that market is not uncommon.
Thanks that helpful! Because they started off saying 120-130 lol

Yikes I make that as an acd in Toronto but if that’s the going rate… problem is it’s even more expensive there than it is here.
Vancouver ad pay is extremely low. 140-145 is actually a fairly decent rate for a new CD. I know CDs in Vancouver making 130 and most agencies act like they’re doing you a favour giving you 150+. It’s rough there.
Damn that’s bad. Thanks for the insight!
