Don’t agree. You give them a higher salary range because that’s you negotiating range. Do you think they’re not doing that with you? Yes you’ll look foolish if you immediately say you’ll accept your own low ball figure. Thank them. Tell them you’ll get back to them in 24 hrs. Then try to rangle a few extra thousand dollars. They’ll respect you more for it.
Not sure of your situation exactly, but typically the max of the salary band for the role may be what’s reserved for someone who’s grown into the top of that band, with experience. Depending on your level of experience most employers look to hire with the intent of matching the level of exp to the comp, to allow for increases with performance. For example: if this new role is a move up into the next level (mgr -> Sr mgr), you should expect to move into the lower-to-mid part of that range.
You know this is a really good question and it is one I have often wondered myself. I really don't understand the point of luring someone in only to be like hey jk we tricked you. At the end of the day they probably won't accept the offer so why do that?
Taking a quick step back. Am I misunderstanding what the salary ranges listed in JD’s? I was under the impression the band listed is what you could potentially make upon hiring. Pay increases, bonuses and other compensation you receive after being in the role 6 mos., a year or more later aren’t part of that initial band are they’? Isn’t that just gravy?
