There's definitely a shift in thinking when students have to apply critical thinking and sophistication to their communication in ELA; that, I enjoy. The discussions and issues that reading novels, poetry, and plays brings is so valuable. But honestly, it's seeing how some students view the texts and what they come up with that I really like.
Honestly, it's what I learn from them and their more international points of view. They thank me for being their tour guide into our culture and academics yet their prior knowledge is so rich!
My favorite moments are connecting and conversing with my kiddos at a personal level through literature…those moments when something in a story or poem touches their own experience or causes them to reflect and connect the text to their microcosm.
I like teaching it all especially novel readings. My students love the books we read in class.
I love it when my students accomplish something that they didn't think they could.
The words. Playing with words. Watching and listening to students working with words. Watching them find meaning in words and creating meaning with words.
The creativity that comes with creating ELA curriculum—within acceptable limits to district approval
I love how creative we can be in ELA! How we can meet the kids where they are at and help make them feel seen in the books we present to them. When students feel seen, respected, and appreciated, that’s when the real learning begins. I couldn’t imagine teaching anything else. I currently teach 7th grade gen Ed and honors ELA in the Chicagoland area for reference!
When you get that perfect novel for a class - they fall in love with it and can’t WAIT to get to class so you can read and talk about it. And the way they talk about the characters is almost like they’re real people.
