Tell your boss before saying anything to the client. Receiving more data than you need or plan to use may not be a big deal, especially if it is just a different timing of the same data.
Tell the client, but frame it as a data issue. "Just to confirm, we expected to have the data from 2020 to today, but the dataset looks like it has 2015 to today. Can you confirm if that was intentional?"
If it’s highly highly highly sensitive information like Health or personal identification or something, you probably need to tell the relevant people. The headache of a few more messages and access requests is way less burdensome than the fallout of you having inappropriate access and someone finding out that you knew you shouldn’t have it yet chose not to say anything, ESPECIALLY if there ends up being some sort of incident
It's not anything like that. It's more like, I'm only supposed to have access to current data, but they gave me historical data, too. Exact same set of fields.
If it’s not sensitive it’s fine.
But rule of thumb is do not get into any kind of policy violations, after all it’s just job and not something personal to you.
They told me specifically that they would under no circumstances give me what they then gave me, so I'm not speculating about that part.
Just tell them they gave you access to data that someone else said you shouldn't get. And ask how they want to proceed.
