What's your thoughts on getting a PMP certification? Is it worth it to boost salary?

I think it's well documented that people with certification earn more than those without it. Make a cost-benefit analysis depending on how many more years you expect to be in PM and see if it makes sense for you.

Worked like magic for me. Got 100% jump

like

Yes, I’m a Principal Program Manager, managing a team of program managers in engineering.

I think it's definitely worth it but nothing beats hands-on experience.

like

Yep this is my story. I have certification for it but not PMP. I'd rather get an organization to pay for it. It's a nice to have but not a must for me. I have 9 yoe and most of the PMs I have worked with that have it usually struggle managing and completing projects because they often get caught up in the PMP related stuff. 😃

like

It may or may not boost salary, but it will help provide third party validation of your skills as real (not just claimed) which will open more doors to you. It is definitely worth the time and financial investment, particularly if you get the company to pay for it which is fairly common. It also teaches the basics for formalized project management baselines that are absent for many people who learned on the job in companies without formal PMOs or structure.

This is me right now. Thank you for this comment. I've been in a PM role for 4 years but never really trained. Just on the fly with tips and pointers along the way from other PM's. My company is paying for it in June. So I'm glad to see this comment, thanks

Certifications are usually a waste of time and money. You'll be better served in investing time to build relationships at those companies where you'd like to work. If I can be of additional help, feel free to reach out to me on LinkedIn at www.linkedin.com/in/alanjstein

I disagree. I got PMP and I instantly got multiple offers in a couple of weeks.
There are times where companies increased their offer just because I had a PMP.
Good certifications help.. it builds credibility.

For me I earn the same as PMP certified but wanted to get out of my head and ask others. Thanks for the feedback.

like

Everyone I know thta has done it has gotten a significant salary boost. I would say to go for it. It looks like it is worth it IMO.

like

Thanks.

Can you give an example?

A member of my family got it and it helped. She got her current job only because she had the Certification.

My 2 cents... If you're already doing the work of a program or project manager then sure why not, but make sure your company has some skin in the game when it comes to addressing your salary bump. Maybe even negotiate a paid curriculum to get fast tracked. If I recall you need a ton of hours as a PM to even qualify to take the test.

What did you use or do or both to pass it?

I'm getting mine in June, but it's being paid for by the company. I guess it's good for the resume, but I don't know if I can ask for a raise if they're the one's who pay for it.
