I my law firm due to it and now I’m happy where I work at. Take the step and look. If you don’t get the appreciation you deserve than go ahead and find a home that will appreciate your work and inputs.
You should be shown nothing but appreciation. Now that I have a few more years experience and paralegals helping, I’m so thankful that they make my job go more smoothly and especially when they catch any errors. Paralegals can literally save our law licenses and careers. If an attorney doesn’t treat you or others with dignity and respect or displays a lack of manners, social graces, or professionalism, that reflects poorly on them as people, sadly. Sorry you’ve been through this and I hope things get better! Attorneys with manners and social skills are out there
But they are gems and not easy to find. I'd look at people who don't come from "elite" backgrounds and actually have meaningful work experience prior to law school or were first generation since those people have a better grasp on how the real world operates and likely did a legal support role before becoming a lawyer so they know and appreciate the rigor of those jobs. Often, the paralegals know more than the lawyers do in various realms.
Seriously. I even considered retiring from my paralegal career altogether due to the misbehavior of a lot of attorneys. I have invested 15+ years of my life in this field though. :( Work abuse is real!
First of all, abuse on the job should NEVER be tolerated; it is wrong, creates a hostile work environment and is bad for morale. No one, regardless of position on the company totum pole, should ever mistreat a co-worker. That said, I have been relatively lucky not to have been treated this way on any of my paralegal jobs. Yes, certain people I worked with were not to my personal liking, but I haven't experienced anything even close to what you or others have. The powers that be need to have a better understanding of the importance of every lower-ranking co-worker and realize that without the associates, paralegals, specialiats, or support staff, there would be no firm. You represent "one firm" as Merrill Lynch commercials used to say. One doesn't function without the other. They would go out of business tomorrow without the integral role that us paralegals play. Don't let them high-hat you as my dear mom says, they're just people with the same basic hopes, dreams, aspirations and fears that we all have. Know your value and keep your head up! Best to you and your family (and co-workers).
