I’m at EY. It’s not advertised on every corner but I wouldn’t say we are hiding it. Ask a partner in your group to explain it to you - just keep in mind that our benefits change periodically, eg my retirement plan is different than that of new partners. I have those conversations with every one of our candidates and folks in the pool. Once you get closer to actually bring in the process, they also offer more info as well and once you make it you have to sit through a 4 hour session on it - it is complex.
Is pension til death an EY thing? It isn’t in mine.
Why do you think it is opaque? Compared to what? Ask any partner you know and trust, and I’m sure they will tell you all about it. Plus there are endless threads in here and other places, not to mention Glassdoor disclosure, etc. Partner comp is no more or less opaque than executive comp in any other large business - public or private.
BCG1 - you’re right, private companies don’t file comp disclosures. But most of our firms have hundreds of not thousands of partners. Public companies disclose the top 10 execs’ comp max.
The whole concept of partnership units, buy-in amount, how the loan works, how you get out, filing taxes in all 50 states etc. It’s a big shift from a straight up salary and people throw out comments such as “you make more in your last year before promotion” and “unless you stay for 5 years it’s not worth it” and “you have to buy units and sell these back to the firm when you leave” and “if you don’t make it by 40 you don’t have enough time to vest before retirement”.
Or if anyone can answer the above that would be great...
Were pretty transparent with the folks who are actually up for promotion for a good three years prior. Are you sure you’re up?
We aren’t particularly opaque - it’s disclosed to everyone at global training starting at project leader level

P4 can you send the “book” over?
Seriously! Who ever heard of translucent money?!
It’s not a secret in any company - but it’s very different from staff comp so it might appear complex on first sight . All of us routinely help senior managers understand how this works
You’re not crazy, OP. At KPMG I didn’t have a clue how Partner comp worked. And much of the stuff I’d heard in hallway talk was wrong. Some newer partners gave me some insight, but it was only going through the partner comp training that I got an accurate and complete take.
And I can’t tell you that I totally have it down. Still refer to “the Book."
