When did partners decide that outsourced admin services are a good idea? They’re terrible. You lose more time doing stuff yourself and correcting mistakes than the amount you save with outsourcing

Sorry. You must be new. That time you spend is billable. Admin time isn’t. Outsourcing admin is the closest thing lawyers get to arbitrage.

We tilt at windmills enough in this business, but feel free to fight the power. I’m more Sancho on this one.

I agree it’s a horrible idea. My firm is working to push out all the secretaries with 15+ years of experience. I get that it increases billables, but it also decreases my availability to help on more matters

PSA - We are headed into a self-imposed economic slow down. Now is not the time to lateral but if you do, I would make sure you are at a recession-proof practice or firm. The top law firms will be okay (they always are) but if you are part of a larger group of associates with no work, you are likely to be axed. Latham did it in the 2008 and 2011 and it will happen again. If you are an associate or really anyone but a rainmaker, you are expendable.

What do you think is the acceptable cutoff time for when it’s no longer reasonable to expect an immediate response to email? I’ve been getting only a few hours of sleep for the past few days. Finally had a night where things seemed quiet and I fell asleep at like 8:45 pm! I woke up at around 6 am to a full inbox and I felt kind of stupid for missing 9 pm emails because that is a really early bedtime (but boy do I feel better this morning!).

I’m a second year associate and last night I was online until 2:30 AM waiting for one specialists comment to a purchase agreement. I had added all comments during the day from everyone else, and the midlevel and senior were online as well, but it seemed very strange to ask me to stay up just to add three sentences to a purchase agreement. Is this normal?

People who don’t submit their time daily, how do you remember what you did and for how long? I’ve always just submitted each timer as soon as I finish a task—“call with x re y” really doesn’t take that long even if I’m busy, and if I don’t do it immediately I’ll forget all those little I did in the morning by the time I go to bed. No shade at all to those with different systems, just genuinely curious because I see a lot about catching up at month end on here and I have no idea how that works??
