When is too early to leave a job?

I begun a new job a month ago and the environment and team members have been awful! I have been screamed at by multiple customers, and a colleague. I've been forced into hiding for safety. And management are firing staff over anything. I dont feel at all secure and dont see this as long term. Should I wait till I have something to fall back on, or keep going for a little longer?

I wouldn’t recommend “growing tough skin” as a work culture issue solver. It only works for so long before it really starts mentally effecting you and in result may get you fired anyways. I’ve worked for 3yrs under a large furniture company and given the same information and in return for my service for my years of “playing nice” I was given MORE work, more stress, and a pay cut until I called out for mental illness and was fired for doing so. I would give you the advice to work there until you find something to fall back on and then hit the door. It’s one thing to have customers yelling at you but coworkers…and y’all more than likely hold the same responsibilities & authority is crazy!

Unfortunately, this is pretty common these days. I would just grow some thick skin. Let people’s bad attitudes and threats go in one ear and out the other. There will always be someone that yells or cusses you out. Just stay calm and ask what you can do to make it better. If they still want to cuss at you, etc. try to keep your distance. Work your schedule and go home. It’s not easy, but it becomes common place after a few months. My boss hates me, but I just do my 40 hours and come home.
You can definitely look for a less hostile environment. The only thing is, most places have their bad eggs. Don’t quit your job until you have something else in the works. Jobs are hard to find these days. I’ve been looking for almost a year now. Best of luck to you. Also keep in mind that you never know what someone is dealing with at home. Someone may have lost a relative or friend recently and you happen to be the one they take it out on. Kindness is always the best response.

It might be a common occurrence, but it shouldn’t be. You’re at a place of business. You have just as much right to be treated with respect as the customers that are screaming at you, and you DON’T have to tolerate it from coworkers or supervisors. Customers, because of the nature of the industry, are always going to be another story, unfortunately.
All that said, if the environment is unduly stressing you, find something else. I recently took a $4.50/hr pay cut because the money wasn’t worth the damage being done to my mental health.

I would look for something else while working in your current job. It sounds like an awful place to work.

Look for something right now. Look hard for another place. Pound the pavement if you have to on your days off. If they're dumb enough to fire you during a tantrum, apply for unemployment ASAP (and a condition for collecting it is proving you're looking for work anyway, so win win... at least it is in Texas).

If you are concerned that your resume's gonna look bad having a job where you left it after just a month... just leave it off. A short month-long gap on your resume won't ring many bells compared to a month-long job listed on the page.

Best of luck. I had to quit jobs when the pressure and anxiety got too high and I feel ya. Growing a thick skin is a necessary skill, but let's face it, NOBODY gets paid enough to be abused on a daily basis by employees OR customers.

It’s never too early. That said I’d start looking and try and stay employed until the next thing is secured. But if it’s too much and you can afford to leave, leave.

Dawg.... get something else lined up and jump ship
