They’re used car salesmen. They want as many resumes as possible and to get them submitted so that if you end up hired, they get their fee. They have to be charming at first to get you in, but then they’re on to their next target and have no incentive to continue to give you attention.
It's difficult to discern the motivations behind recruiters and their actions. I've seen some puzzling moves, and the ghosting of people seems to happen pretty frequently. I suspect they're playing a game of numbers, contacting a great many people and then only working seriously with very few. Who they choose to work with seems mysterious, and I assume it says more about them and their requirements at any time than about any of the potential candidates.
One of two things is happening: 1. They’re waiting on feedback from the interviewers. They usually won’t follow up until they have some update and sometimes it take a while for interviewers to turn in their feedback. 2. You’re a “no” but they wait to tell you until the selected person accepted or even starts.
