It’s really both of those things.
When you wake up at Christmas, you are 36 and single, and your former colleague who got married in 2010 has three kids. Also her husband got her a job at a major bank b/c she was a ditzy art major and no way was girlfriend landing that job herself. That’s when it really hits you.
My journey has been more about appreciating how much the hand I was dealt has contributed to a very happy and successful life. I think it’s both luck and choices!
When I chose to be born to a well-off family in a rich country. Wise choice. Imagine I would have chosen a family with $1 per day income (about 20% of global population I think).
My parents drilled the importance of life choices into my head from the day I was born
There’s a lot of “keep showing up, working hard, taking/feeling ownership, and committing to a team”, coupled with the luck of being born in the right environment, with the right genetic makeup, and finding the right team to join to play at the right levels.
I do say “Life is full of choices”, but when it comes to work, the choice of continuing to show up and out in the work is likely the one that matters most.
I like to think luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. Privilege on the other hand is a whole other animal ...

I’d argue luck is the largest piece of success in life bar none
@OP with this comment didn’t you just destroy your (super privileged-sounding) straw man?
Being in the right place at the right time or luck ... I know many people that have caught tailwinds at companies and knowing the right people as a result their careers have skyrocketed. Kudos to them of course but I don't think their decisions had much to do with it. Certainly their intelligence and work ethic played a major role. Glad others share a similar sentiment in this thread.
I never did not know this
Luck and work ethic
