Right, lol. Let me just go back to school and spend another hundred thousand dollars on another degree. Because it's that easy!
Believe me, now is the worst time to try and pivot. The market is hard enough in your area of expertise, let alone try to pivot in this market.
Might have to design part time until it becomes full time. Lots of brands still have design needs they just don’t have the budget to hire full-time. Reach out and keep your rate reasonable. Find local business with social media needs. You might have to wear a social media manager hat for a little bit.
This has been the big issue for last 5 to 6 years or longer, not sure if anyone notice this, we have seen more people have BS and MS degree, but no experience and ask for high pay job and quickly got reject it. It's not always about that degree, with out experience it won't get you anywhere.
China has the same issue, young generations graduate from college with higher degrees, but can't find jobs and no one want to work entry-level job for experience
I’ve thought about this a lot lately.
I’m over 20 years deep into my design and creative career.
The current state is extreme: AI that should have “tool” status but is widely elevated to threaten replacing us, the toxic competitive workplace with finite opportunities, degrading DEI policy, and the economy and politics of today that have really made me question how our designer/thinking skills can be repurposed, and continue to prove valuable…
Our profession has pivot skills baked in. We can apply our strengths to ANY industry. But job post after job post stresses work experience in specific industries. I’d even argue that entering a “new” industry can inject some fresh perspectives and spur more, fresh ideas…
I think our work is widely misunderstood.
How do you get hired in an environment in which AI is believed to be better, smarter, faster, less expensive than us humans?
If this is to self-correct, it’ll take some time.
Organizations have to see for themselves how AI wielded by nondesigners can be unrefined, shortsighted, thoughtless, a random mess.
How many of us will be able to hold out, survive, until the delusions of AI clear?
I don’t know.
Does anyone have ideas/experience in pivoting elsewhere—where we can add value, be appreciated and be paid a livable COL-aware wage?
Drop ideas in the thread…I’m sure a lot of us would be interested.
