As someone who has always worked in the private sector, I can confidently say that most Govies have imposter syndrome issues.
Your technical knowledge and your mission experiences are extremely valuable.
I'm personally looking to swap fed for local, county or state. Unfortunately I don't have any specific niche background aside from Navy Aviation but, I have been federally recognized for my work in my office and am working on a program Management certification and then some sort of cert in HR with specifics in retirement portfolios. Super fun.
I was already illegally DOGE'D after receiving a promotion from one federal agency to another federal agency. Did I mention I'm a disabled veteran. So, as a person that took an Oath to this nation many years ago I've NEVER understood how this nation could fall in love with an individual that was clearly deep in the pocket of a KGB murderous dictator.
At the end of the day, one day when I'm an old man they will have repay me for this illegal firing, but as we move to be more like a Hungarian nation, millions of Americans are going to suffer, stocks are going to suffer, American families are going to suffer, and why - because a president in the 80s made it legal for news and radio to lie to the people.
Attorney here, and same. In a niche legal area specific to the government. Heard back from a few places, none great.
I have a solid academic background too, but feel like I don’t quite fit the mold for most private-sector jobs. I'm not giving up, though.
Apply for some software jobs, stressing your experience with programming in your current role. Be prepared to answer questions on your skills and show some expertise in an interview setting - ie stand up and code something. Scrub your resume of the government keywords, subjects, etc - working for the government can be considered disqualifying in many companies. But I've worked with many government workers who are both skilled and dedicated. Don't give up easy- apply, apply, apply. You'll be hired.
