Why are there so many nepo babies at GT? It seems like a bigger issue at GT than elsewhere

None in my office, but I personally know of 3 associates who are kids of high-power partners.

It's unbelievable at GT. I have not seen or heard about it anywhere else, but a bunch of the associates I worked with there were related to someone at the firm or a client's kid.

I worked at GT for 7 years but recently left. I don't think I ever met a nepo baby at GT. Can you give us an example?

One of GTs real estate clients had his son hired to a different practice group. Doing a deal now where I caught it as I was wondering why the son was copied on the emails.

Thought the nepotism manifested as a sort of a quid pro quo between firms

Nepo as in client kids or kids of partners? Or both? Curious bc I know a number of firms have anti-client children policies but are less strict about attorney to attorney family ties

Most firms have anti nepotism policies I thought

On the whole, law firms are the worst offenders when it comes to not following their own policies and, not infrequently, legal requirements. I’ve heard SO many stories of harassment, hostile workplace, employment law violations (e.g., unpaid paralegal OT). Maybe they figure they can defend themselves, or maybe it’s just tolerated from big business generators and power partners because they get more out financially from them than the compliance risks they bring to the table.

Second worst, at least in my area, are physicians. Sir, the rules don’t just apply to you; the laws were WRITTEN specifically for you.

I’m doing a deal and some random junior associate at GT in a different practice group was added to the closing email chain and he is the son of the client signing the closing docs. Not Miami or NY office.

1) Average expected package of an associate
2) Average experience expected at ZS to get hired at associate (not BCN)
3) Good books to upskill and ace the consulting case interviews

How many matters is typical for one associate to handle (BL lit)? I know it is group-specific, but just trying to get a general idea. I’m a 2nd year and I am the only associate staffed on about 30 cases-meaning I keep track of all deadlines, do all day to day assignments, keep on top of following up with client/OC, and all research/drafting. Partners handle deps/court but that is about it. Is this a normal case load to be responsible for as a jr? I being dramatic by thinking this is too much?

Litigators—how many different cases are you on?

Been feeling spread too thin lately but I don’t know whats typical. Curious what others do. And would you mind sharing whether you’re a junior, midlevel, partner, etc??

I realize sheer number of cases doesn’t tell the whole story… obviously you can be buried on one massive case. I’m finding it hard to jump back and forth between everything I have going on right now, though, but I don’t know if the answer is to just deal with it.

I realized recently that I can turn my “super associate” persona at any time. I had it off during covid when my kids needed me and got a bad review. So now it’s back on. I’m responding to midnight emails (and daytime ones in under 20 minutes) and getting work done the same morning. I’m spending countless hours doing edits over edits. I actually don’t like super associate. Why do people live like this 24/7?!? 🤔

I’ve been unsustainably swamped for months. Partner said they wanted to add an additional, more senior associate to the team on one massive case that went from “stayed” to “on fire” in the span of a month. I said that sounded awesome and the thought of someone else having to take on some responsibilities was such a relief… so why do I feel competitive and threatened now that the senior associate has actually been added? 🙄
