I don't get the point of getting an MBA. I feel like there's nothing b-school can teach you that you can't teach yourself... and networking is feasible without the help of an overpriced university.

I disagree with Citi.

If you want to make MD in the future that Master's is going to help.

like

As this keeps coming back, what does any school teach you that you can't learn on your own?

like

I did analyst to associate promote and on fast track to VP. Definitely not planning on going back to get my MBA at this point, and nobody at work is suggesting that I should. However, if I ever decide I want to leave banking and do anything other than start my own business, I think an executive MBA program / part-time MBA program would likely be necessary as a simple check the box for HR in the corporate world. Think it'd be hard for me to get to the c-suite without it, but don't think it will be hard for me to get to MD without it.

like

Didn't say it's required. But it's certainly a leg up.

like

If someone is telling you that you don't deserve to grow in an organization without any of the 3 letters, it is BS. All the programs are a structured way of learning stuff that could be learned in an unstructured way and if you know how to put all the pieces together you don't need to spend the money

@MS1 All in all, you're right. I waited 20 years to finish college. I wasn't any less capable of doing what I do now as a result. But a piece of paper is expected to demonstrate you have the ability meet the absolute minimum expected job requirements. Think of it less as a degree, and more as "pre-applicant training" certification.

like

Unfortunately HR disagrees with that assessment. So we must continue the social caste charade of education until that changes.

like

HR is in the business of keeping costs down which includes coming up with reasons why someone does not deserve to grow..I am sure Citi has examples of promotes without an MBA

like

@barc1 - Yes, skip a year is what I meant.

like

When people throw around fast-track in ibd what do they mean? Skip a year?

Well I'm already a C level so the rules are a little differently for me, yeah.

Agree with AS1. I think only makes sense if you get out of banking.

How is this communicated to you re: fast track? I get lots of props at reviews but no one proposes to let me skip a year.

Uh, party for 2 years, that's the point. Duh!

You vs you with an mba... you'd choose you with an mba

@BNP1 -- more like you vs you with 2 fewer year of experience and an MBA

Well, i got my mba at night and on weekends, so i always assume that's the move others consider. I'm on record as thinking that experience is better than school. But both is best.
