Why do so many people ignore LinkedIn Premium messages, especially when they’re clearly from someone trying to connect about a job opportunity?

I’ve had multiple situations where someone accepts my connection, we have a quick and friendly back & forth, and they even thank me for reaching out. But as soon as I bring up the role I applied for or ask for advice about the position, they read the message and then nothing. Even polite follow-ups are ignored.

Why accept if you plan to ghost someone

There’s a give and take. People in leadership positions are constantly hounded on LinkedIn for referrals, sales pitches, this, that and the other thing. You get numb to it.

Why would they carve out time to talk to you about a role out of the blue?

Offer something of value. A particular take on something they’ve posted, some professional common ground, anything that lets them know you have done the slightest amount of research into what they do.

Company culture is a super broad and subjective question that you’ll likely never get a straight answer for. It’s leading and typically no one in a leadership position that wants to stay there will tell you “Oh it’s awful, stay away” on the record like that.

You need to be precise about your questions so that they’re easier for someone to answer. Those questions can also tell you a lot about the culture you’re looking for.

Things like what growth has looked like for CYZ role in the past, what are the goals for this year for Y group, what are their own professional goals at that organization, etc etc.

Those can key you into where they’re at. Also people love talking about themselves. We all do.

I can only tell you my perspective. I don't accept invites from random people or people asking about a role. A referral at my company just means someone in recruiter looks at your application. Nothing more. I have no interest in talking to candidates over LinkedIn. If you make it to the interview, then we'll talk.

Because these people have a filter for how much they’re willing to invest time with strangers on the internet. Even going back and forth a few messages can feel like a lost cause when you get thousands of emails, texts, notifications, and LinkedIn messages every day. The default is for people to limit their exposure at this point

like

I’m not specifically ignoring LinkedIn premium messages. I’m generally ignoring messages from strangers who connect for no reason other than to associate my name with their application. I accept messages from almost anyone who reaches out to network, but networking and contacting me solely to ask me to help land a job are different.

What the difference between a Premium message and a regular message in this scenario?

like

You can send a longer message than the usual 250 characters in a connection note so I was able to send something longer and more professional or so I thought

like

I would avoid bringing up a specific role that is open/available - focus on trying to get a call or a meeting to ask questions about the company and what their team does to see if you want to pursue that in your career. That sounds better than just trying to use a stranger to help you land a gig, right? It also never hurts to offer to get them for a coffee/drink/lunch since the $20-$50 expense and new connection if you make a good impression can be worth multiples more in an eventual opportunity. Also I would focus less on managers and more on folks that do the gig you are applying for so you actually get a sense for what they actually do.

Just restarted stimulants and already I'm dealing with twitches again. Does anyone else get these? No type of pain or anything just every once and a while my body will twitch strongly. Afterward I feel normal, but it's a bit annoying, and I can't control it at all which is a little disconcerting. Don't remember this from when I took stimulants as a kid, but it's been a while.

Biggest cringe for me has got to be when people include “ex-<company name>” in their title… see it for loads of the big 4 firms and I’m thinking wow you must love slave drivers that underappreciate you 🤣

This one is going to make some of y’all mad, but it’s so annoyingly unnecessary. The most irritating part is “is it a shirt day or a skirt day”…. Like women don’t wear shirts with skirts and men don’t wear shirts with pants. Shirts and skirts are not mutually exclusive. I’ll just leave this here.

There really is such a direct correlation between cringey title and cringey posts.

Before LinkedIn...to me, the king of professional cringey was Shingy. Do you guys remember him? He was aol's overpaid "digital prophet" and got paid to visit companies at lunchtime and babble the same kind of nonsense we now call "LinkedIn cringe".
