I was hired for my first teaching position five days before the start of classes; L.A. decided to work on her novel. She left plans, materials, words of encouragement for “the teacher who will replace me”, and an absolutely fantastic team! During that first teacher back-to-school week, almost every teacher in the building stopped by my classroom to introduce him-or her-self and offer assistance. My team prepped me on team procedures and policies (a perk of teaming) and gave me excellent advice ( seating arrangements, class rotation, etc.).
Schools getting ready to welcome teachers hired at the last minute MUST have some sort of welcome wagon in place to smooth the way because I don’t know if teachers like the ones I had that fateful year still exist:-(
95% of teaching jobs are filled. It’s not like they’ve been twiddling their thumbs. If they don’t have qualified applicants, should they just shrug and say, oh well, it’s too late to hire anyone? They can’t wave a magic wand to have candidates apply at a more convenient time.
Lots of time, admin has July off. So hiring either happens in June or August. And August is really when things start to move; we had two resignations from my building yesterday, which means we're now looking for replacements. Other districts are hiring; if your co-workers take one of those jobs, then your district is going to have to hire a replacement. That's just the way things are.
I think stories like that are always sensationalized a bit. There are always some positions that don't get filled for a variety of reasons, so a few last-minute hires will happen. It can make it seem like things are broadly chaotic, but usually it's a small number of open positions here and there that need to be filled.
