Apparently, it is when employers like mine only cover 20% of your meals, but I agree with you 💯 This should just be standard when you work at a restaurant. Plus, we rarely have time to take a break to eat anyway.
At least the meal isn't deducted from your paycheck :(
No kidding! What’s worse is when you don’t get free food but just discounted food. I hate that. Management always acts like it’s some big benefit to give us a 30 percent discount on food while working.
Benefits have various tax implications. It differs state by state, but defining a meal as a benefit may be required / more beneficial to your employer. I wouldn't take it as a slight

I think if you’re paid less than the average and you are getting a free meal it’s a requirement and not a benefit. But if you’re paid well (like some servers), and you get a free meal, I’d say that’s a perk. I do think BOH should get free meals but not sure about FOH (especially if they make a lot).
