On #2, I have to ask though - this seems to be comparing operating partner vs consulting partner. What is the “out rate” in the up or out for operating paths at PE firms? Is it harder to make than consulting partner? My hunch would be yes.
Making partner in PE Ops is probably as hard and takes as long as making senior partner in MBB. But comp is higher than MBB all the way and the gap grows wider each year.
A PE Ops Sr. VP / Principal easily matches or exceeds total comp of a 1st year MBB equity partner.
Also, many people in PE Ops don't want to be a PE partner and leave voluntarily to become CxO at a portfolio company. I wouldn't be surprised if once you enter PE Ops and survive 2 years (both hard to do) the chances of continued progression are actually better in PE Ops versus in MBB.
From your experience, how much of PE ops is managing outsourced consulting teams versus performing the work itself?
