They want to know if you’re in the same ballpark. But it’s a silly question on an application. Your salary demands could rise or fall based on a deeper discussion of the job. If it’s remote and low stress, maybe I don’t squeeze them for every penny. If it’s high stress, the opposite. I usually skip that question and let them ask in person.
Do you put more or less than what your actual desire is?
Exactly. I don’t want to scare them away, but I also don’t want to lowball myself. But I desire the job more than anything.
I put N/A or 0 in that field if it require an answer
Most open positions have a max salary allocation attached to them. It's a waste of everyone's time to interview people who expect a lot more than the max available.
It’s not for the no pile, it’s an additional consideration they would factor in when tossing up between choosing people.
I get that, especially for higher levels. But I feel like everyone kind of gets the same at my level.
