We live in the city. Getting a 3 car garage with $900K is very difficult. You’d have to send the kids to private.
If you are considering suburbs the west of the city ie Naperville is a good option. North of the city is also good with good houses and schools. You will find more diversity in Naperville then straight up north.
Crime in the city and property taxes are just crazy, so it might be worth living in the burbs if taking the train in is not problematic.

Oh and most important we are looking for a neighborhood with lots of kids, friendly neighbors etc.
