Making sure I got his good side
Hi Everyone,
I just received an offer to work as an software sales representative (SDR) for IBMs Z systems. I'm coming as a sales engineer in the cloud security space. Can anyone advise me on whether Z systems are something worth going into? Also what do the growth opportunities look like at IBM? Is there opportunity for lateral movement onto other teams? Not too sure how I feel about working on mainframes (Z systems) but they keep pitching hybrid cloud to me. IBM

Yes, background check will show your rank. Also, it doesn’t matter if you get promoted before you get through interviews. If you put on the application you are a Manager it’s considered lying and you will be terminated when they find out. Either way, they are going to find out so best thing is to be upfront about it.

Look yourself in the mirror and say I’m a liar. Is that who you want to be? In the US, the background check would uncover a title lie. In EU perhaps not, but you may need to have an honest conversation with yourself about your moral compass.

Oh hi, is your name Elizabeth Holmes? Are you just claiming eventuality as today's reality?

Just tell them you were interviewed by 2 male seniors and that’s why you lied about your credentials. They’ll totally understand.
Just curious how “male” seniors is relevant here

Ya that came off the right field

Yes they’ll know. And what does whether the D interviewers were male have to do with anything?

The only time I’ve seen this posted here and not get shut down was by a McK person saying that they put their ‘acting’ title - justification being that you have to perform at the next level for a year before being promoted. Sounds like BS to me; you need to be up front and figure out a way to tell them you lied without looking bad.
Thank you so much for sharing this idea as it’s super common to put deputy/acting when temporarily promoted - I got in touch with recruiting manager and flagged I wanted to share my most recent CV and flagged the job title wasn’t correct. They called me and even mentioned that it’s common Deloitte recruit external people at SC to be safe but they’re pleased to hear how I’ve progressed so far, that I’ve updated it and appreciated my honesty. 👍 Thanks again!
They will ask for proof of your role if they give you an offer - how long do you think it will take to get promoted and how long can you delay the interview ?
I will be promoted officially in Sept but covering for colleague on SPL from this March.

Also, not sure why you need to lie on your resume / LinkedIn at all. Firms hire based on job experience match and not solely on your “rank” in your last job. Why not just list under your SC rank the SM level duties you performed? Going beyond the reality like you have will tarnish your reputation and render the totality of your work experience moot. Very risky and thoughtless approach.
Also, I’m a male cisgender in case you wanted to dismiss my thoughts based on the reality you shared.
You lied
Yep, very odd
For startups this ain’t a problem there’s no official way to find rank and title, for consulting firms, they usually have db’s with rank, title and division/specialty area that most background check companies connect to so you’d get caught. On top of that the consulting sphere is really small, I can reach out to some Deloitte friends right now in about 5 minutes and figure out you were lying. Not a smart move.
Actually, US style background checks are fairly uncommon in the EU…

I have only my experience, but my background check was fairly clear and extensive when I worked in the UK.
Just to explain the male senior point - they reiterated on numerous occasions that there are no senior females at the firm yet and it’s something they’re working on, and then admitted they had no time to review all of my CV experience. SC here have 4 years of experience before being promoted to Manager and I hold double the experience. I am also covering Manager role formally pay wise from March for colleague on SPL so I didn’t really see it as a lie at all. They lie everyday to our clients about my job title and level so I don’t understand the reaction here but feel it’s very two faced given that all I’ve observed so far is - lies :)
Well here is the summary of it. You lied about your title on your resume. What others do doesnt absolve you from doing any of the mistakes you made.
You can explain in an interview that you are operating as partner and ask for whatever you want but lying on the resume and then trying to justify it just makes me uncomfortable about your candidature. Besides i too dont understand the male intervirewer part !
Female, euro here. Wanted to help but now I'm just annoyed. US style background checks are not as common, that said better be upfront and honest about it. You are billed for a role and if you had reservations about your positions you have to address it very early on. Also, noone cares about the cool stuff I did beforehand
Good luck!
Really happy to share how I’ve set up and now run a new offering using my external experience of helpful!
