I go to Mission BBQ every veterans day. It's easily the most patriotic thing I do all year. I did go to American Dunes this year though, that was special.
It’s a Veterans Day thing, they also have cake available

I didn’t join because I had an innate calling to serve, and I didn’t come from a linage of service members. I joined straight out of high school because I was afraid of going to college and failing. I served 4yrs before being injured in Afg and retired.
The hype around Vet day always makes me uneasy. While I appreciate the “thanks” and know friends/coworkers are being nice- it makes me feel wildly uncomfortable.
I don’t do anything for the day. I eat at home to avoid the crowd and spend time with my family like any other night.
Just chill with friends and reminisce about the best and absolute worst days of our lives lmao
Drink whiskey and watch a movie
I volunteer at Woods National Cemetery placing flags. My Dad, US Army MSgt. (WWII and Korea) and my Mom, his widow, are buried there. I’m a US Army veteran, as well. I hope to get an exemption to be buried near them as the cemetery is only allowing special cases. Since I’ll be cremated and it’s generational service, I hope it’s an easy decision.
Don’t forget if you’re taking her to Arlington, what about the history aspect of that? Do you know how Arlington cemetery even came into being? There’s hundreds of heroes buried there male and female. Is that something she would enjoy learning?
I do hear the feedback that thanking veterans for their service, and all the things that are wrapped around Veterans Day makes some uncomfortable, but it is a debt that can’t be thanked enough, and it will never be repaid.
Trying to see it from a veteran’s eyes at those simple levels is a bit easier than trying to think of all the things that veterans have experienced. We do need to do a better job as a country and bring our veterans home more whole than they were being brought home as they are now with no downtime in between the end of a combat tour or multiple deployments and coming home to your family.
Treat it like a normal day
