Would I be selfish if I left midyear to move to Washington for better pay? I love my students, and I would feel really really bad for leaving them. But I hate making basically nothing an hour, spending tons on stuff for my classroom, and getting yelled at by parents who probably wouldn't pass one of my literacy tests for 5th graders. I want to get out of here, but I feel like I'm leaving for the wrong reasons. Is that crazy?

I've switched districts, and I've then contacted a number of teachers from the old district and brought them over to the new one, where working conditions and pay are much better.

I'm sure upper admin at the old district hates me for it. But those are employees, not slaves. If they didn't want them to leave, there's a simple fix: pay and treat them better. But they don't want to do that.

You do a job for a paycheck. Caring about doing a good job reflects well on you, but if you feel the need to leave the job for a better opportunity, go. If enough people do that, those in charge MAY eventually realize they have to make the job more attractive.

Sounds logical to me, not crazy. If it’s broke, fix it. Once a thing in life no longer works for you and stops serving its purpose. It’s time to move on, your students will survive and so will you.

No you are not. Do what you need to do for you!!!!! That’s the thing in education I think. You are made to feel guilty. I know we are here for the kids but there are times we have to make decisions for us.

like

Firstly, that's not crazy. Secondly, I shouldn't have laughed at that but I did.

The fact that this is worrying you says a lot about your character and your commitment to your students…. That’s why you became a teacher. Now approaching the end of my career, I am increasingly in awe of what we are expected to do and usually for free… because we love kids. Sure we love our students, but in few other professions would workers be considered shellfish for taking the best job available. GO!

Remember your “why”, as in “why am I working here for so little money when I am not valued by my district, my state, and the parents of entitled students?” 😜

Nope. You take care of you.

No, not crazy at all. You have 1 life to live. Just make sure that the move is worth it, and you'll have a better work environment to thrive in. You will still encounter angry parents!

What makes you think parents won’t be yelling at the new school or that you will no longer be spending out of your own pocket? I’ve taught in 3 different states. That’s an issue across the board.

Those are precisely the right reasons. Best of luck in your new place, where you are appreciated!

Just to tack onto what HSECT1 said, thirdly, that’s not crazy. Lol. Do what makes YOU happy.

Doesn't look good on a resume. Be assured that no state income tax is paid by a high gas tax and sales tax. Housing prices are sky high as well. Difficult parents and students are here too.

I was thinking the same.. cost of living in Washington might be higher than expected and leaving a commitment prematurely doesn’t look good.

I'm actually considering doing something like this and living long distance from my husband. My state is high COL and I am making NO money here, and the system is highly dysfunctional to say the least. Northern states pay double what I get here. Was thinking of renting a place, working up there and coming home weekends and holidays. It sounds crazy but I've known 2 folks who do it.

I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

I have been in management for the past 8 years and part of large corporations. I just recently joined a small organization that I have wanted to be a part of for the past 2 years, accepted the role of general manager. This organization knew that I don’t have general manager experience, no payroll experience, no experience setting prices, no purchasing experience and today, 6 days after starting, I have been asked to step down due to not being confident that I will be ready in 3 weeks…

Any tips on how to deal with this…my entire team was let go today (was 5, now just me). We functioned as the Marketing team for 4 brands and primarily focused on product launches and sustaining social media content. My plan moving forward is to only focus on the top revenue driving product launches for now and say “no” to basically everything else. Would love to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation and can offer some advice.

Does anyone remember flat, round water bottles from the early 1990s? Like for school kids? They had some kind of ice pack that you would freeze and it kept your water cool. And then you would squeeze it to drink?
I think they came in neon colors?
All the cool kids had one. Not me though 😏.
