lol absolutely not. Just casually ask the screener if the in-office requirement is a hard requirement. If they say yes, just thank them and say you’re no longer interested.
Yeah - for that commute time 5 days RTO would be a no-go unless pay is amazing
Never. Even if they modify their policy for you initially, they can change to enforce 5 days a week policy at anytime. Do not underestimate the toll that kind of commute will have on your life.
Chief
I turned down 90k more for a job that was 2 day a week in office with that long of a commute (drive to train, train to city, subway downtown, walk). Already make over 450k TC for almost entirely remote job. Tough decision but I valued my free time more
SC2 how many years out of law school are you?
I’d bring it up after getting an offer?
That's a Huge trade off - minimum 4 extra hours per day between travel time, prep, etc, plus associated costs. I would definitely need more than Fit to consider that
No.
I’m in 3 days a week right now and moving on. Don’t do 5.
Never
Nope. No way.
That commute is nuts. I am in office 5 days a week, but it’s 20-25 minutes by car, 45 minutes on a bike.
Would be a hard no for me. I’m moving on to a job that is 5 days in office, but it’s a 30 min walk or 15 min bus ride in midtown. I’m also coming from big law where it’s a trade off on lifestyle that I’m willing to make.
That commute would be way too much for me. It’s a huge amount of time to lose from your day when we already work long hours. Watched someone I love (also an atty) do this and get ground down to nothing. Think it took years off their life. Time is one of the most precious commodities in my life.
For me, it would be a hard pass UNLESS I was planning to relocate within weeks to be much, much closer to the office. (Would this be an option for you?)
But again, this is me. Maybe you’ve been looking for a long time, love everything else about the job, want to maximize the time available to listen to CLEs…? Agree w/others; might be very hard decision.
Wish you the very, very best and know you’ll make the decision that works best for you. Good luck!
I commute 5 days a week at 30-50mins each way and absolutely despise it. I love my job and the people I work with, and they can be flexible with times/if I need to stay home for an appt, but honestly if it was any longer, I’d quit.
That’s an extra 3-4hours of your day. You’d have to leave home at 7ish and not get home until 7pm. When do you get anything done/relax? It’s a no from me.
I would consider it if 1 day a week. Not more.
I’d apply with a 5 day in-office policy if I was interested enough in the job, but I would *not* apply to any job that would require more than a 30 minute one-way commute.
I had a 2 hour each way commute for about 6 months after college and felt like it took at least 5 years off my life. Did nothing but work and drive. Never never again. Remote or living (or moving to) within a 30 minute commute radius are my only acceptable options.
Depends on how good the comp/title is. Maybe 2 days a week but I would also consider getting a hotel near the office for one of the nights in between
