Would you be annoyed if you were asked a question in an email chain and your manager answered it for you - the response came two minutes after the initial email, there was no communication to see if I was responding, etc.

Mansplaining or either insecure and controlling or all of the above imo.

depends on the issue at hand and my relationship with my manager.

with a positive framing, they could be trying to save you time/and support your position. I once saw a manager reply to someone on a weekend to note that the issue wasn't urgent and suggest no one needed to reply until biz hours. Likewise if the person asking is cranky or likely to be difficult, they may be trying to get in front of an issue beforecit affects ICs.

But if they are taking credit for your work, or not allowing you to demonstrate competence, or just talking/emailing over you all the time, then definitely not cool. WTS the easiest way to handle it is wait until a 1-1 and say "thanks for your reply on that.. was thinking you're so busy, and I can help take these issues off your plate. Plus that gives me a chance to demonstrate my writing chops :) What do you think? are there any emails like these youd prefer to handle yourself (and why/how will I know) ... otherwise ok for me to take point on this for now."

I had a manager that would do this and I would just start asking immediately would you like for me to respond to this person or would you prefer to? Think it can be a control thing but also sometimes they are just wanting to be involved.

like

I would discuss it as it seems like an anxiety response. I always give my direct reports time to respond. If it’s a straightforward question and they haven’t within an hour or two, I’ll ping them on the side to see if they need help. Only after discussing with them, if it’s best for me to just respond, do I do so.

My boss will only answer on my place if it’s after hours or on the weekend and she happens to see it first, which is clearly her taking something simple off my plate. This doesn’t feel like that.

I had a manager that did this multiple times, and in some cases would ask if I saw the email. Like relax, its only been a few minutes, let me think 🙄

That is an obvious observation. A few minute seems excessively controlling. Now I work for a manager that understands we work in an office environment and everyone will live even if I dont respond in an hour

My boss has made decisions for the team and I don’t mind bc she will take full ownership/responsibility for it

Should note this has happened a few other times

I can see why it could be annoying but hey! One less thing for you to do! If it bothers you, just casually bring it up to them.

like

I’ve had it happen a few times. I try to convince myself my boss wasn’t intentionally trying to take the credit for things when I’m the lead and the sme. But I’ve had questions posed to me before and have answered those questions and that person turns around to thank my boss for answering them and starts asking more questions. I quit answering after that. Let them figure out their mess and leave me out of it.

Yes. I’d be annoyed! Unless it said something like, ‘sorry for jumping in here,’ first

Sometimes I do this for my staff when I know they are in meetings or crunching on deadlines not related to the email, to give them space to focus. I guess I should stop?

100% stop until you ask each of them if they would find it helpful. By jumping in you are undermining them and they need to be able to have authority to make decisions or work with others without you essentially showing others you don't trust them to do their job.

like

If it was that immediate, they probably just had the answer at their fingertips and didn't even realize the question was directed at you.
I've probably done this a time or two with my reports because it's coming from another department and I want them to know my department is on top of it and communicating by getting them the quickest answer possible.
I wouldn't read too much into it.

Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with discrimination as an Asian in the workplace? In my company it seems like it’s a white boys club where and they just promote white ppl because they’re white. And then they have a lower bar for promotions for minorities (traditional minorities likes Hispanics and African Americans). Meanwhile they make Asians do all the work. I am not generalizing that this is how it is everywhere but it definitely is that way in my workplace. Any advice?

Are you responsible for giving performance feedback? Avoid giving personality based feedback. Examples include telling an Asian person they are too quiet/shy or telling a Black person they are agressive/abrasive. DO NOT DO THIS. It clearly represents bias in Performance Management. Performance feedback should be tied to business outcomes with clear examples of what the person does well + how they can improve.

The job itself sounds pretty interesting. Lots of opportunity for growth (eventually will build out a team).

My only concern is the hiring manager. I talked to someone in my network who has worked with him in the past and she told me that she would 100% work with him again bc she learned a lot, but that he has a very dominant personality and that some ppl can butt heads with him.

There’s no reason you have to put up with a job you hate. I spent many years working in a toxic environment with a boss who gossiped and lead through fear. He wasn’t really much of a leader but basically a foreman. And he could make my existence miserable. I admit that it wasn’t easy to find another job but the bottom line is: trust your guts. If you feel something is wrong it’s because it probably is. Don’t second guess yourself. Look for options and and fight for your mental health.

This is twice now in back to back weeks my boss has asked me where the disconnect was in our communications because I didn’t deliver on what “was asked”, even though I know damn well what was asked and what was done were the same thing. I’m not sure if he’s changing the meaning or isn’t communicating what he’s envisioning or what but it’s embarrassing to be called out like that, and to have people think you’re the dumb 23 year old.
