Would you guys take a job in a group that’s billing 2,500+ for market pay? I’ve never had the issue of not having work, and I’m used to being that busy. But I was hoping to let my foot off the gas for once and bill closer to 2,000 at the next firm. Wondering how common that is.

I make market pay at 1950 so.... no.....

2500+ sounds insane for market pay. I would maybe consider for above market pay but would go in fully expecting to be miserable.

I’m in a group that runs that hot but gets above market bonuses (like 1.2-1.4x). It really depends on your life setup & the group. It’s hard if you have kids and do real, in-your-face M&A/restructuring style timelines for transactional work. Less so if you practice in litigation (with some exceptions like investigations, data breaches, trial work, etc) & have no kids/spouse. It’s also about the people you work with. My team is a good fit for my (deeply idiosyncratic) personality and makes 2.5k feel less stressful than my prior firm where I could post like 1.7k and be fine.

Thanks for the responses. I really do like this job, just wish I could find a position where 2K is the norm. Guess I’ve been unlucky.

That's seemingly just the nature of working in Biglaw.

But every day you have the option to buy back your time.

How do you buy back time?

It's simple—by saving and investing.

And you don't need to be uber wealthy to regain control of your time.

I’ve been at a job for a few months and hate it - partners set unrealistic deadlines, micromanage, and create work that truly is not necessary/push urgency when there is no real urgency. I had other offers prior to accepting this job that may still be options, and going back to my old job (for a pay cut) might also be an option. I can’t tell if this is just burnout, growing pains, or just an untenable work environment. Would you ride it out for a year at new job or pursue other options? HELP!

Partners: I’m a sr. associate managing multiple cases without a whole lot of oversight. A few of the cases I am managing are very large, very fast, and very contentious. I try to be as immersed in the details as I can, but can’t know everything. I rely on others to give me accurate and actionable facts. Lately, the actions I have been taking have been based on wrong, inaccurate, or incomplete info. I then get reamed in M&Cs and look like an idiot. [Cont. in comments]

A friend was told their firm will cut ties EOY if certain things don’t improve. Friend had planned to quit in the next year anyway (to start their own business), so there is no real incentive to bend over backwards. Friend’s goal is to keep the income for a little longer, but to minimize conflict / headaches. What’s the best move here? Wait until EOY and take the severance? Give 6 / 9 / 12 months’ notice now? Is there such a thing as too much notice? Could too much notice backfire?

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school
