1600 hours sounds fantastic… Depends on your financial situation but I would stay put if I were you for the work life balance.
You could make double for billing 300ish more.
But it is not an easy math like that because 1600 really is the line between you have a life (though busy) and you don’t have a life. The 300 more makes a huge difference. Also, you need to factor in your potential to make partner at this firm.
I would stay at 1600 if you like the people u work with, and you work 1600 generally in a way you are okay with. Like I work hate to bill 1600 where a lot of the work come in late but you still have to be in the office and everything is a fire drill
I WISH I got 240k in pay, let alone only have to bill 1600 hours to get it....
How lumpy/consistent are the 1600 hours? That averages to about a 30 hr workweek (assuming no vacations). If it's generally something like that but consistently 9 AM - 2 PM, then hell yes, brother, I'd have stuck at my firm probably at least another few years. But if those hours are like 4 PM - 10 PM (or often weekend work or inconsistent day to day), then maybe not as clear because you can find in-house gigs at around that comp with fewer demands (depending on seniority). That was what I just couldn't stand at a firm...I never felt logged off even when I was logged off.
But if you're a senior, try finding something in-house. I'm a "6th" year that just landed my second in house gig, and I make $270k all in at a pubco. I still think I'm a tad underpaid, but I'm generally working 9-5 the vast majority of the time and don't work weekends.

And how do you ensure you’d only be working 1600? When you say you’re at capacity, it isn’t the same as someone billing 2200. Why not just go in-house? Pay would be comparable and you’re likely to actually get that WLB you’re after…
Coach
Agreed, but likely an easier task than actually getting a BL employer to respect the 1600 cap…
yes, for a true 1600 or some lucrative bonus structure for anything over 1600. I don’t know anyone that makes 300,000 more for a true 1900, at least one who is allowed to stay at the firm… I am sure someone here is going to tell me I’m wrong
Full remote too*
If money is your dominant concern; why ask? In 9 years of firm life. I think I have a life. Wife and I go eat at nice places. Enjoy our time together. The week is busy, granted. But we love the time we do have. It’s also nice I can support her as she transitions to a new business and I can pay for a mortgage in a nice part of town. Donate to charities I care about. Be there for people both personally and financially. It’s not all roses and sunshine. But nothing truly is. The question is what do you want more now?
That’s a unicorn job. Yes
