Average whiskey with friends, premium whiskey with fellow connoisseurs. I feel like my friends don't really get whiskey and i'd rather not waste the good stuff on them

That really depends on the occasion. If it's a special occasion, then a premium whisky would be the way to go. If it's a casual gathering, then an average whisky is usually preferred.
I typically share an average whisky with my circle since most of them also prefer it. I get premium with my colleagues.
I buy a big bottle (1.75ml) of Wild Turkey 101 and hide everything else, lol.
