Any insight on the leveraged finance group at Shearman & Sterling NY or the culture of firm more broadly? Any interview tips would also be appreciated.

Advice needed! I was laid off in Jan and since then I’ve been building my own practice (which I started last year and was doing on the side). Since Covid happened, work has been a lot slower so I started applying for jobs. I got two job offers in these past couple weeks, but the problem is that neither is in the area I want to practice, though the experience from one of them would be probably useful in the future. Ultimately I want to have my own practice, but my dilemma is that as a 3rd (cont.)
What do you wish you had prepared before giving notice to your firm? Other than who to tell and when and how. I mean like copying a set of the doc templates I use. Anything else to prepare?
New Yorkers: what bank do you use for your checking account? Wondering whether a credit union is the best option. And is there a benefit to using a New York based bank?
I’m planning to buy the study materials for the SHRM-CP certificate through Amazon. What are the best ones to obtain?
Hey guys. I’m the event planner for CLSA at my law school and was wondering if anybody is willing to be on a panel regarding ethics during the coronavirus regarding the way confidential information is sent and received, how you guys use zoom for depositions or any ethical challenges you’ve come across during this time. Thank you!
Got approval to hire a new admin/paralegal for my transactional group. Firm isn’t doing a great job advertising the post and I think the best pitch we have is “Give us two years making around $40k before law school, work here during law school, and you’ll have a job paying $190k already set up for when you graduate.” Any suggestions how to find this person? I’m in DC.
Hi Everyone! I’ve been thinking about potentially switching from HR to another field of work. I was curious to know if anyone on here started their career in Hr and ended up in a different field? Also, what field did you end up in and why did you make the change? Thanks guys!
Any advice for dealing with OC who personally attacks you in their response to a motion? OC’s disco has consistently gone beyond scope and has been ruled on. Tô avoid OC going into questioning beyond issues we filed MPO to make sure depo of a D employee w be limited. OC completely missed the point of MPO & attacked us on disco/delay tactics. We’ve produced all that exists and he keeps arguing that it seems we are keeping stuff from him.
We are having difficulty with managing employee absences. Most seem as if they don’t care about termination. What have others done to motivate hourly employees to come to work? We have changed schedules, offered perfect attendance bonuses, replaced the points system, etc.
Why do partners email you on a Saturday afternoon asking you to send them something that is saved on the doc system. Just why.
Due to the labor shortage, pandemic, and poor upper management decisions, my ops team cannot support the commitments we made to our clients. I worked hard to build relationships and get their business only to see it crumble. What a mess. Is anyone else having the same experience?
Section chair sent me a job offer. Before I accept, he lowers it because apparently he lacked the authority to offer me that much and had gotten overruled by someone higher up the chain. What the heck
I feel like I can’t redeem my career. I’ve been out of paying work since I graduated. My bar was delayed due to a medical problem and since then I’ve only been able to find volunteering. I’ve been working for free for 2 years now. My network is tapped, my mentors are confused why I can’t find anything, my law school’s career services actually gave up on me, I don’t have the money to move to a new place, I have no other support and I can’t even go back to retail because nobody’s hiring out here.

Has anyone worked virtually abroad? Is there a way for firms to know that you’re in another country via IP address?
Anyone else get passive aggressiveness when you have an emergency situation and relay that to a partner? Starting to feel like I am drowning and no one is understanding. If family is prioritized once and everything is compounding and you’re going your best, is there any room for grace? My hours are great and I work all times of the day and night, when I truly cannot because of an emergency I get shit for it. 2nd year for context.

Once the dust settles post COVID what do you think the hybrid model will look like for most companies with number of days in office vs remote each week?
