Hmmm.. That definitely sounds frustrating, especially with a master's in Finance. It's pretty normal early on in IBD to be stuck with profile work, but you should try to get more involved in other parts of the process. Maybe chat with your team about opportunities to expand your responsibilities and skills.
Totally normal and frustrating. I spent 2 years in IB M&A doing 90% of PPT and very little analysis. It varies within banks but I felt like I needed to take it up on myself to become more technical and gain more modelling expertise.
Yes, been there. You have to learn on your own. I moved to a different bank and that helped.
It’s the market. And it’s the bank and the group you’re in. Btw I hear your frustration but having a masters in finance means nothing. You’re still an analyst.
I never said I wasn’t an analyst.. and never said I didn’t want to do grunt work. But right now, I’m doing nothing for my own development or my CV. I want to make sure I build hands-on experience. When I expressed nicely to my staffer that I wanted to have more exposure and learning opportunities, she took it badly and threw at me even more shallow work + crazy deadlines until I had a health incident. I agree though that it’s my group and my bank specifically.. but with all this work, I barely get time to breathe, let alone prep for interviews
I’ve definitely been there during my tenure at IBD M&A. It’s better to discuss early on with your manager about exploring other roles rather than be stuck at it too long and not being able to get out of the current role you’re at.
What do you mean by changing role sorry ? It’s all the same role - we’re all analysts
Oof
Curious… why are you doing profiles in a pure M&A group (assuming you’re at a BB)? Wouldn’t your group predominantly work on live deals…
Ah gotcha. Makes sense now. Market should def be picking up but obvi depends on your sector coverage!
You could have the other end for your first year. They made me make a manual day of infamy in a Pie-chart for Brazil and Columbia and Fire department. Should keep you busy for 20 to 24 hours a day.
