8th year M&A associate, and the only one in my office in my practice group. I’ve grown increasingly dissatisfied with my group for several reasons (never had a midlevel staffed on any deal of mine from end to end, firm’s group doesn’t do many transactions in this city’s largest industry and therefore see difficulties growing a practice). Am I insane for considering lateraling, or even going in-house? Obviously no guarantee, but have gotten impressions door to partnership here is open if wanted

Just know re lateraling that outside of Biglaw deals regularly get staffed with much less leverage. Ive been back and forth between Big and Mid law and in the latter handled many deals as a partner with only a junior associate or counsel with a brand new first year. Having a mid level as an 8th year would be fantasy.

There is no downside to seeing what's out there and having some conversations to see if the grass could be greener elsewhere. You have very legitimate reasons for wanting to lateral, and depending on your credentials and firm, you could possibly lateral into a counsel or even income partner-level role elsewhere as an 8th year. Despite any goodwill you've built, it sounds like your long-term prospects could be better with a firm that has a larger M&A group in your city that represents more local clients, which will help open doors for in-house opportunities down the road.

I woke up today tired.

My work cell was buzzing and then I remembered something.

I forgot to thank the bus driver that dropped me off a few days ago.

I got up and rushed downstairs to find the bus driver.

It was raining outside but I was already running barefoot to the bus stop.

I stood there soaked in my pajamas as the bus approached.

Then, the door opened. The driver got up and shook my hand.

I sat down and started my shift.

I’m the bus driver. Reminder to love and thank yourself.
