Ask them for the range they are planning for the position. Do not give a number without knowing their range.
Give your salary expectations based on the job description. Base range $100k-$120k with a kpi earned bonus structure.
Your expected salary range doesn't have to be based on what you're currently making. While a lot of people do use that as a sort of benchmark, it's not mandatory. Tell them what you want to make and what you're willing to work for. If they aren't going to get close to that number anyway, you'll save yourself a bunch of time and effort.
I don't like when recruiters ask the salary questions, but since they come up sometimes, I usually get reaady with my researching on local market rates, then discreetly asking people at the company for their expectations. In the negotiation, I say: ‘Based on our research and my skills, I’m aiming for the industry standard of $X.
Yes, the question feels like when you're looking to purchase a new car and the salesperson asks how much you want to spend. Consider it this way: are they taking your needs into account and want to help you afford the best vehicle for your budget. Or are they trying to make as much money from you as they can? Same here. If you are within the salary range, your expectation, the recruiter doesn't want to waste your time nor the hiring company. Thoughts?
Unpopular opinion: if you’ve gotten to the recruiter part of a job you’re applied to, you should have done research on the position enough to know a general number.
If not, add 25-30% of your current salary.
You can use any of the job search apps to see where your job is as far as price range (according to experience, area, company) and compare to the offer of compensation bracket from the new company

I would ask them for the salary range for that specific position.
I always ask what the range is for the role. I try to never give them a number. I ask for the range and then tell them my requirements fall within that range.
I was asked same question over the phone by a recruiter. They offer a shift premium (20%) for second shift and it’s a 50 minute ride compared to the current job only 20 minutes from home.
I asked for what I’m making now +20%
Second shift is not an easy shift to employ.
