“Reflecting on and adopting the use of micro-affirmations would be a positive strategy to prevent microaggressions. Micro-affirmations are small acts that foster inclusion, listening, comfort and support for people who may feel isolated or invisible in their environment. Focus on action, not avoidance – create new good behaviours.”

With the Black Lives Matter movement making agencies think about diversity, I thought it would help Latin Americans as well. Unbelievably, people STILL think it’s okay to broadly assume Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans and Dominicans are not “qualified” to work in advertising. Look https://joinfishbowl.com/post_gkppjui

I am calling BS.
There is no way someone is going say something that incendiary out loud because what’s being said is the diverse talent is less than everyone else.
Unless there were no HR Partners on the call.
As one of those diverse or “token” candidates I can assure you the vetting process is rigorous. I’m sure none of you commenting had 8. + interviews wanting to ensure fit
Op, if you were on the call and see the blatant presumption, have you done anything to escalate this through hr? If not, you’re as much part of the problem.
It cuts both ways, too. There's a latent presumption in the statement that promoting diverse candidates will have a negative impact on growth.
The sentiment and corporate policy could be "value add" through different backgrounds, but no, it's presuming that growth needs to be sacrificed.
Interesting take. I think that statement can be interpreted a number of ways. It’s very vague. But narrow selectivity does add more administrative burden and potentially directs focus away from other priorities, so objectively, the statement is fair.
Im a little older and remember "Tokens". I thought they were gone, but theyre coming back. If there werent quotas, does anybody even care or notice race? I never have. Just get my stuff done, I dont care if you're a 5th level gargoyle - nice powerpoint deck, Beelzebub!

Ok Op we get it you don’t prioritize diversity. Many shareholders think that it’s great they are moving the needle.
I'm surprised at the comments here. Instead of appreciating the MD for stretching his neck out, we're saying he is biased? For someone who takes 10 interviews per week, I sure feel he is brave and right! Diversity hiring definitely slows our growth but a necessary adjustment we're willing to make.
it’s about knowing where to look. The talent is out there.
There could also be a much better job supporting and advocating the diversity present at the firm. Then we would be much more excited and engaged about recruiting our networks
I believe someone would say that, even our head of HR, though I’d question the growth element, bc it indicates the talent we’re picking isn’t as effective, at least short term. Reality is, we aggressively believe the diverse talent creates more growth and diversity of opportunities, so the MD’s statement is personal bias. It’d take more than our quota to really choke growth.
