Dial it back. You’re doing too much. Focus on the goals, eliminate fluff.
You have just two main goals.
1. Get client buy-in
2. Inspire the Creatives
You have no idea how much it helps me to just see this. It really just boils it down. We know how much strat loves fluff 😅
Just don't. I learned this the hard way. If you keep doing it, people expect it of you and even worse, you expect it of yourself and may feel less valuable putting in a reasonable 40 hours. Set boundaries, focus on top priorities, let go of the small stuff or delegate and communicate to your boss and their boss about the situation.
I don't see how that 60-65 hour workweek is tenable. Something's going to give, and it will eventually be you. The company will find somebody else to do the work, so you should not feel like it falls on your shoulders to have that much put on you. Have you discussed your workload with management? Otherwise yes I would focus on finding another job.
Rising Star
Talk to your boss.
Part of their job is to help you manage stuff like this.
Or,.can you see a light at the end?
This was me for the first 3 months of the year. But I knew I just needed to get to April and I'd be good.
So I persevered, and now it's April and I'm back to more normal hours.
You’ve got to demand more support. When you inevitably burn out, they’re going to blame you for it if you haven’t clearly documented that you’re overloaded and need more resources. Same if you dial back and the work inevitably suffers.
You ghosted the recruiters or they ghosted you? Not sure I've ever had the luxury of doing that, that's why I'm asking haha.
Don't feel shame! It happens, hopefully you figure out to get a better wlb, so you have time to breath.
Thank you so much everyone. I have previously asked for more support and it’s basically at the C-suite level at this point because our whole department is suffering. Not sure what is being done. Going to take a couple days off to rest (and look for a new job) 😅
It’s an unfortunate truth that 60 hour weeks in advertising are mostly accepted as normal and not something you’ll get sympathy for. I’d just keep talking to recruiters but also try to reach out to agencies directly. Three ghosts sounds like you’re just getting started 👻
Talk to your director, get support, and take a few days off for mental health.
In advertising the work always expands to fill all available time. Start constraining the time. Look for the things you can knock out and the things you need to go big on.
Don’t count on any C-suite moves other than lip service just yet.
Your boss should be noticing/Finance should be flagging this burn rate (You’re surely not sold in at 150+% which means what you’re doing also isn’t profitable)
Pro
Is it that you literally have too much work to do, or you’re putting too much effort into the work you do have? Each has different paths to a solution.
