After a month of interviewing and a clean background check, a company told me I’d be brought on once they finished reference checks. It’s now been 6 weeks. I was honest about my short work history (longest stint is 8 months), so I don't think it's that. But now they're not returning my calls or emails. Why would a company put you through all that just to ghost? Is this just how it is now?

A warning, i have been phished through the premise of a job interview.thats definitely a new low from scammers but verify interviews they plucked my info from indeed and through that got my info, when I got suspicious (after it was too late) I called the "hiring company" (was a real company) and they said i wasn't the only one getting duped. Duties would have me responsible for a small team of research nurses as well as other managerial duties for the department.
