Age is part of the problem but from an employers perspective, its more of a symptom. Age is a red flag because the experience, confidence, know how, network etc that comes with someone who is at or past the mid-career commands a decent salary. Businesses we are approaching for work are bottom line driven and willing to chance it and pay less for an early career person.

To get past this you need to find a way to sell yourself as the best deal in town.

I do sales for a major engineering firm. Focused on new business and exploring new markets. Last year I was in the top 50% for order intake, and first in number of projects won along with number of new customers. I think this is extraordinary given the effort it takes to win new business.

For next year my goal increased by 2.5X, and less of what I bring in counts towards that target. I really enjoy my job but I will essentially be getting a large pay cut. Lost in what to do besides quit??

I’m up for a promotion at work and I have no idea how much to ask for since it’s not a standard position. Currently I’m a team lead and manage about 8 technicians, my promotion will be to a regional service delivery manager, and I will be managing over 30 in 3 locations. I went from a tier 1 engineer in managed servers to team lead with about a 10k increase in salary.I’m thinking about a 15k increase this time from 65k to 80k.
