If the firm is that paranoid and willing to fire someone for just talking to a recruiter, you need to leave anyway.
The only "test" emails I get are the fake phishing emails sent from our IT department. . . And it is somehow the old partners who are the ones who always fail
Don't be ageist. We weren't all born with devices in our hands. How would you like it if the old partners said "those young ones just can't grind it out like we did"?
I’m a recovering BigLaw lawyer from long ago, now a recruiter. Reading the comments on this site reinforce why I Ieft practicing. No “job” is worth what you all are going through. You only get to go around one time. Find something you enjoy; a profession where you can relax. Hate to say it but a lot of you seem completely unbalanced!
Thank you for this post. A career counsellor very recently told me that "it's very difficult to set boundaries in an exploitative and toxic work place". Until the CEO's and COO's start recognizing what HR professionals are noting these days - that people want to be treated with respect and have autonomy and work-life harmony or balance, over advancement - the legal field will continue marching to the drum and having high turnover. It's up to all of us to speak up constructively and professionally. But those who do suffer the risk of retaliation. So, unless the bosses are keen to hear the desires of their lawyers and staff, it's grin and bear it until you find something better or leave the field. This is bigger than a lot of us. If people were brave enough to form unions in the legal field and recognize that the model is broken, we might get somewhere.
Actually, it's not paranoid at all and frankly it's a good instinct. Some people in some firms do this and it's actually well known. Try to find out who your firm uses to recruit and don't reply to those recruiters except to say thank you, you're happy at your firm and you're not looking at this time (if that's the truth).
This would never happen. Just would not. Way overthinking!
Sounds crazy but my firm has said they will know …
When firms hear that someone is looking it only makes them want you more. Unless you’re not working out then they are excited
Yes! Hope this helps
Yes. This job is getting the better of you and turning you into an ultra-risk averse nervous wreck. Recognise the signs.
As a Paralegal I wonder the same thing.
Tons of recruiters reaching out constantly and the legal community here is a little tight knit.
I also wonder whether others in another firm might say something to my boss if they come across my resume.
Yea a little paranoid. But I have thought the same thing in the past lol.
Hi, I am a legal recruiter and you are not paranoid. However, we look for great talent at firms and often send emails to the only email addresses we can access, which are work emails. If you are looking for a new role, I am more than happy to chat with you about the opportunities we have. You can view them at jrrossagency.com
No. And I have news for you.
Every one leaves every job. There simply is no other option
I interviewed for my first job out of my llm in 2010 and haven't interviewed since. Through a process of mergers I'm at a new firm but never quit or left a job.
I’ve heard that recruiters have been caught emailing about jobs with firms that don’t exist. I know that’s different from the question posed but my point is we can definitely do diligence in these agencies before engaging in discussions
This reminds me of a conversation with the COO of a Amlw 100 firm i used to work for as nonequity partner. He was visiting our (satellite) office and stopped by my office to say that the firm management was worried that I was leaving. I don’t know how they got the hint (or if someone told him) but i was actually trying to leave and had a few interviews. It didn’t bother me that they suspected (or knew it). My hours were not low so there were no hints from that side except i was spending more time on a non-key project. I was also a bit more disconnected than before with the office — because i lost interest in being there. Other attorneys may have gotten the hint tho. Afterwards, i had no sense that the firm tried to do anything more than try to keep me (by having some key partners show an unusual interest in trying to work with me). I ended up leaving the firm about 8 months later on my own.
This is HILARIOUS, Y‘all got some issues!!!
It's sad that you find painful work experiences funny.
