An in-house job was posted about a week and a half ago. I’m a perfect fit for the role and it’s located in a somewhat rural area that I am moving to next year when my wife finishes school. I applied last week but haven’t heard back re: interview (I know it’s recent, so I’m not expecting to yet). I am connected on LinkedIn with the person that previously held this role. He used to work at a firm I interviewed at a few years ago but turned down an offer. He was an associate that interviewed me.

The person still works at the company but was recently promoted. I haven’t talked to this person outside of that one interview a few years ago. Would it be weird to reach out to them about the role, or should I wait for an interview. To add some nuance. I just started paternity leave and want to use all of my leave before I move jobs (which coincides with my move next year). Would be weird to reach out if I would need to ask them to wait and let me start in March after my current leaves runs out? Would it be better to make that ask after I got an offer? I’m not sure I will have a ton of competition for the role given that it is in person and in a rural area.

No point discussing start dates before you have an offer. Dont overthink it

I think no harm in reaching out to discuss how your contact liked working for the company and the role. However, all the other things I would just hold on for now. Create your high level game plan, but don't put in all your eggs in one basket.

NFW- I just had a good laugh. Earlier today I was on a video conference call reviewing a Private Label Agreement template with a larger company who wishes to brand label products we develop and manufacture. We came to a very one-sided provision and my sales VP stated “for this one, how can we just say ‘hell no’ ...nicely?” The other person on the call said we can replace the wording with just NFW (no f@$* way) and I said “I will have to add that to the defined terms section so it’s clear”

Any tips for moving up in a medium/large-sized legal department, aside from switching companies? Considering taking a position with a small-cap in the US trying to build their legal department. The title is standard “counsel” although the work would be with the senior leadership team and reporting to the GC in Europe. How reasonable is it to ask for a bump in title - Senior counsel or Head of Legal, US? If it matters, I am a 6th year and have been told that I will be expected to hire a junior or paralegal as we build up.
