I totally agree. And I honestly don't think it's "tale as old as time," I feel like employers used to be more willing to train people in particular industries. Now it seems like they want you to have precisely related experience which is just sort of unrealistic
Tale as old as time. Years ago, I interviewed for a copywriter position at a small pharma agency. "Experience in BPH [benign prostatic hyperplasia] is essential," the interviewer said. "Great," I said, "I worked on the launch of Proscar" (then the one and only marketed drug for the condition). "Sorry, not relevant," the interviewer said, "This is a new drug with a new mechanism of action." "Oh," I said, "so your client is Flomax, the first alpha blocker for BPH. NOBODY, by definition, has category experience in that mechanism." And I closed my book and walked out.
Nothing is more frustrating. The point of a marketing person is to be able to bring a product to the masses, our job is to become familiar with a product and learn how to bring it out without industry jargon. At this point, I’ve gone back to agency work and wouldn’t want to change it. I don’t want to get pigeon holed into the same product every day, now I have a career with variety and that gives me so much relief.
No kidding just because I got my start in marketing and branding for home services. Businesses doesn’t mean I can’t learn how to do anything else. You know it’s marketing and branding. There’s a lot of overlap. You just have to learn each so yeah when someone ask like hey you have to have five years experience in this one particular type of pants it’s annoying
“Only those with 10+ years of bellbottom jeans will be considered”
I love this because its so true. There have been so many times I just thought if they would just gie me a chance I can literally learn everything. I wish they would just be a little more open sometimes.
A lot of times it has to do with churn. Working on telco, pharma, and finance fires goes so much better when someone’s worked in it before and actually wants to do it again.
