Easily. I’m too old and have been in consulting too long to navigate the politics of a Senior industry position. Takes time in the trenches to learn those skills. Chess versus checkers. I haven’t been playing chess long enough to anticipate the checkmate setup moves against me.
Plus, I love my job. It’s perfect for me, but that’s just me and what I do. Everyone has their own experiences.
I’ll say for the hundredth time on this ap; there are dozens of roles available to partners in Big 4. It’s not like you’ll be hawking Enterprise Risk Management Technology implementations for twenty years. New options open up as you grow with the firm, and those options are pretty awesome.
Others’ Mileage May Vary.
I'm a third year partner and I'm still deciding if it was all worth it. All the days on the road and all the missed family events and lost friends. The money is ok and probably better than industry (in spite of significant capital contribution deductions). Im told it gets better once my large chunk of capital deductions are done with. (I'm not a US partner and we don't have pensions). So cash is king in our territory.
If I look at the other side of the coin, I was always a ordinary student - maybe 70th percentile. Not gifted in any particular aspect. However my B4 exactly valued that. My hunger for success, ability to put in enormous amount of efforts, and ability to take right kind of risks helped get where I am.
In an alternate world, being from an engineering background, in any other organisation - I'd probably have made a senior project manager or a BA. Which isn't too bad I guess. But I'm sure I'd miss having the nice car and downtown apartment.
Totally - especially since I went to industry and came back
Definitely.
Yes !
It has worked out for me and has enabled me to do things and develop wealth beyond what I thought was possible early in my career. That said, I consult with many CFOs and I am convinced I could have been a better C suite executive and achieved even greater wealth through options, bonuses, IPOs etc. If I had to do it over I might have gone in that direction.
Very valuable perspective, P3 and P1. Thank you for sharing
