You should take heed of their coaching style to make sure that it is in alignment with you. Ask if they are flexible in conforming to your style. That can be a green flag if so.
Look at their portfolio. You are some leaders that they coached and would you want to be like that leader?
I like to look at their past work or maybe talk to their past people they have worked with. Do they have any success in the past? What have they led or done in their lives worthy of offering advice to others? I think those are all important things to look at.
I'm a leadership coach, working primarily with leaders in tech.
Here's what I recommend looking into for an initial pre-screen:
- Word-of-mouth recommendations - the best way to find someone if possible
- Free intro call - the ONLY way to assess fit
- Who are their previous clients / what companies have they worked with? If you are in high-tech, you probably wouldn't want a coach who works primarily in the education sector, for example
For the intro call:
- Biggest red flag is honestly if you just don't like them / their vibe
- Make sure you get an understanding of how they work with their clients, what a typical engagement is like, and what they consider to be a positive outcome of that engagement
- Be open with them about about what you're looking to accomplish through coaching. If you're not sure, a good coach will be able to help you a bit, even during an intro call
I hope this helps! Feel free to PM me if you have more questions.
This is really valuable! Thanks!
And yeah you're right I'm trying to keep an open mind re their tech background because of the degree of technical complexity I deal with. I figure some understanding is useful.
If they won’t let you audit and attend a few of the classes, big red flag
