Any idea what first year attorney in Big 4 international tax will make in VCOL market? Significant other has an interest. Apologies if this has been asked before, new to bowl.

I made 130k my first year, but I have friends in the other B4 and the only place that paid the same was KPMG.

Depends on whether you only have a JD or LLM. KPMG offered me 110k during JD and increased it to 140k after I got my LLM.

Sorry, I’m not completely sure about that. I interned there and received a return offer at $110K. When I got into the LLM program, they deferred my offer and later increased the compensation to $140K. Based on my internship experience, the hours didn’t seem too intense—most of my colleagues had their weekends free, and we usually left the office around 3 PM on Fridays for happy hour.

A few years ago, it was $125k + 15k sign on

I have never worked in consulting before, my background is all project management/marketing/advertising and I have an MBA. Wondering if anyone can give me an idea of the type of case questions they've been asked during their interviews for VCA.

Thanks in advance!

Additional Posts in Tax Law

Hi, does anyone have any good resources for reviewing deal/fund documents for tax comments? I’m more junior and am often thrown documents to review with little guidance. Does anyone know if any good CLEs or other resources that could be helpful in helping me to better understand the big picture when reviewing documents like this?

When the IRS (e.g., a RO/AO/Examiner) calls or writes a letter… How do you verify that it’s really the IRS and not a scam? I’m new to tax law and I’m worried that I’m going to respond to/answer a scam and give away client info (or my own tax preparer info). I don’t think my worry is unfounded due to the tremendous amount of tax/IRS scam out there but it would be nice to hear from some of y’all so that I’m not so worried about it…

Transitioning from com. lit into tax controversy?

I have a tax LLM and started my career out of law school doing M&A tax at a big4. After 9 months, I got out of big4 transactional hell and into whatever litigation I could find. I now practice commercial lit but would welcome the opportunity to eventually transition into tax controversy (which I wasn’t able to do before). Does my commercial litigation “break” hurt my prospect? How long can I stay in com lit without hurting my chances even more?

Has anyone dealt with stuffing allocation in a non-hedge fund context? It seems even in the HF world the law is fuzzy in using aggregate reverse 704c principles in stuffing allocations. Like, sure, the market is there but no authority really blessed it (other than some Cravath partner’s article in Tax Notes in 2013). If we are talking asset class that isn’t really like marketable securities but might be able to treat it similarly solely by virtue of, say, valuation on a quarterly basis (contd)

I have 13 years of experience in a big box franchise where I’ve handled complex returns from day 1. 30% of my workload has been 1120/1120S/1065 and the rest higher-level 1040s and a few 1041s & 990s. I’ll be bringing 75-100 clients with me.
