Any inhouse lawyers do work on the side unrelated to your day job? Had someone approach me about helping them build out an M&A strategy and sounds like an interesting challenge. Would not be legal work, per se - my background is M&A in In, big law, and in house legal. I need to get clearance form my company to do paid work outside my day job, but I know others who do approved outside work. Curious of others here who have done outside consulting work and how you value it/price your services.

Usually easier to get that clearance as an in-house lawyer given there’s no malpractice insurance issues for your employer to juggle. Just be mindful that your productivity doesn’t dip or they might try to rescind the approval. This can be particularly tricky if you are already working around the clock and now trying to clawback some of those post 5pm hours to sell them elsewhere

I am considering the same thing but contract related in a different industry— my current industry is niche. My employer only requires disclosure of conflicts and competition, but no approval or restrictions on outside business activities or outside legal work.

From my experience, no law firm would allow their lawyers to moonlight on the side. They expect their lawyers to be either practicing law or doing something related to business development. Malpractice insurance as well as conflicts are additional issues. I wouldn’t ask a law firm if i could practice law on the side. The boundary between strategy development and law practice, if any, is very thin.

Thanks. Thats why I asked about in-house lawyers, not firm lawyers.

Renegotiating my contract and curious about maternity leave policies at other practices/hospitals. Do you get paid leave? If so how much time off & are you getting full pay? We are a group of about 75 employees, 6 docs with 5 PA’s and only unpaid 12 weeks off.

I can see in biglaw not bringing up knowing damn well if you get an offer itll likely be high, but this is a midsize

What do you do when you feel the goalpost has been/is being moved re: billable requirements? Like there's a spoken vs unspoken? I chose this job based on billables vs salary and what I'm being told I'm expected to do now is 20-30% (at least) > than what was initially agreed upon. Given my other life responsibilities, this is creating a huge strain & I feel like this is slowly getting harder & harder on my spouse & kids. I'm grateful to have lots of good work but not sure how to course correct.

I’m so bad at writing the background/ facts section for briefs… it always gets heavily edited and no one is giving me constructive feedback other than “advocate more”. In contrast, my legal argument section is generally without edits. For context, first defense lit job post appellate clerkship. Is this normal??
