I specifically decided to move to the Midwest to support FIRE. 32 years old now, married, 2M invested with a paid off house.
So short answer, yes, it’s worth it in my opinion.

Now that I'm at coast/lean I'm considering a move to NYC from the Midwest!

Strange choice
Would love to do this but wondering how I get my NYC salary to the Midwest/ South
Yes, Cleveland. Couldn’t stand how little money went into my future in NY and the taxes 😱
I lived in CLE until a year ago. Fantastic city with great COL.
I want to leave the hcol northeast so badly for better quality of life, warmer weather and lower taxes. If you don’t have family and parents holding you back to a location, I’d say do it
I’d consider it but we just have too much family in the NY area to make it worth it. Moved to a suburb around Covid and honestly the comparison to the city feels like MCOL at times. Still get some of the city perks on nights after work and weekends just gotta eat a 40min train ride.
I think the answer will depend on the stage one is at — whether they’re close to FIRE or still accumulating wealth. I’m still in the accumulation phase. I would expect to be paid less out of the NYC metro area, even considering the NY taxes I’d be saving, and have fewer job opportunities in my area, so leaving probably would not work out to my long term financial advantage. I’m already in the suburbs avoiding NYC taxes and locked in with a low mortgage rate, so I’m managing that side of the balance sheet as well as I can. I might consider moving to a lower cost area if I had enough to FIRE there comfortably, but not here, but that decision is unfortunately many years away for me.
