I would not encourage you to lower your salary, especially if they haven't given you a ranged yet. Let them know what you're making now and say you would like to stay around that range. If they can't match it, they will let you know.
It’s unwise to tell them current salary - you’ll pigeonhole yourself. Tell them the comp range that you would get you to leave your employer. This range is above your current comp.
There’s lots of data out there. I’d research historical salary ranges and place my number somewhere I think I fit within the ranges. Can always negotiate later. Use glassdoor or levels.fyi for reference.
It's best to get the potential employer to give a number first. It will likely be a range, and the upper end of it is nearly always out of reach. Depending on how you rate yourself, pick somewhere in the middle of the range. There's no need to disclose your current salary, and in some US states it's not even legal for them to ask about it.
Why not do it? It might make a difference.
I used ChatGPT to research salary ranges for my industry. I based it on the name of the role, the name of the company, and the location I would be working in. That gives you a starting point. Then you just factor in your experience. ChatGPT can do that too if you upload your resume. It will give you a suggested range to request. Don't ever short change yourself though.
