1. Make eye contact with the camera, not the screen, when you’re speaking to them
2. Hold your framework up to the camera and talk through it like you normally would, but don’t be afraid to point to what you’re referring to
3. Explain clearly where you are in your thought process before and while you’re doing it (e.g. “given the revenue and COGS for each product, now I’ll do X...”)
4. Talk a little slower and a little more clearly than you normally would
I really made sure that what I was saying was organized and easy to follow when I was prepping, and often verbally would say things like “first bucket on the left” or whatever to try and paint a picture
I think I’m going to try to articulate with words more, and use the webcam only when I feel it’s too complicated. Thanks C1
One tip- don’t ruin your healthy work-life balance. Grass is not always greener on the other side (company logo could be :) )
Yea can I ask what you mean by nuance as well
I actually did all of my interviews by webcam (was in a different continent from my hiring office.) the big things are 1) look at the camera not the screen, 2) talk a little slower to make sure they follow you, 3) over communicate your thinking, and the biggest one 4) be incredibly explicit and structured in your language. Webcams are shit so the whole “turn your paper around and walk them through it” doesn’t work. My goal was always to be able to have the interviewer draw out anything on my paper purely by what I said. I practiced this a ton with friends describing structures and the like verbally and seeing if they produced the same as what I had on paper. It takes practice but really pays dividends to speak that clearly in the interview.
I’m in the same boat. I’m worried it’ll be more difficult to come across as who I am and to articulate my ideas through a webcam 🤔
Which MBB is have interviews during this time of uncertainty?
