Anybody here transition out of public accounting? I’m trying to figure out what I want to do. After busy season I’m potentially a manager but I also don’t think this is what I want to do the rest of my life.
I want something where I can have more of a client relationship that feels very helpful to people / somewhere I feel more purpose in /closer to a normal 40 hr work week

Left just after a 10/15 deadline, when I was up for mng but had a gut feeling they were going to give me a bs excuse for why I had to wait until the next cycle. Mind you I had been looking since just after 4/15 that same year realizing that I wasn’t as happy had I use to be, so kinda blessing in disguise I suppose.

I left for industry. Decent size company that I am being slotted to fill the role of cfo in 5-7 years. Best decision ever. I still have variety, I don’t have repetitive tasks; some days are slower than others but I get to be home for my family, and weekends back. Stress level not even on the scale compared to where I was.

If you are at all questioning staying in public, starting looking and jump when the opportunity seems more exciting then scary. Worst case, just make another jump.

Good luck!

Only recognizable for this area. Rereading my post I prob should have said small company probably only considered decent size for this area. Or maybe I’m bias.

Just happy I found a good fit for what I was looking for. Better work life balance, right salary (didn’t have to take too much of a $ cut, but less hours so pay raise is the big picture), room for growth and significantly less stressful. Some day are slower then others but over all, still happy with my decision.

Open up your own practice and hire me!

We had evaluations and normally we have annual raises. I think my salary is under market value at $68k (plus OT) in Los Angeles (5 years of experience). I was told I am one of the top employees in the firm. When I asked about a raise, I was told “when you think about it at your level 5k to 10k doesn’t really matter it’s the long term goal that matters”. What would be your response to that, to a partner who is making 500-600k a year?
