I’m an Expert Consultant on the People and Organization Practice.
Pay and path are almost identical till you’re more senior. The trade off happens when generalists become Managing Director and Partner vs. an expert becoming Partner and Associate Director. At that point, the generalist makes a lot more since they get equity. But in exchange, an expert will have greater job security the whole way because it’s perform-or-out, not up-or-out, in addition to more flexibility the entire way, the comfort of doing something you’ve done before, and less stress as you get more senior.
I am an expert Project Leader in another PA
I was expert C and PL. If you put the work and have the right attitude, you will perform. Therefore, perform or out is a farce, because essentially they can show you the 'up' carrot and stretch the promotion timeline based on politics that generalists don't have. Decision makers are all MDs generalist, and regardless of seniority and pay, experts are treated in general as tier 2. They have tried hard to change this, but fundamentally BCG mythology is that Thinking > Knowing, and it will take a long time before the integration of career paths will be effective
I’m an ECT PL. I’d be slightly more nuanced, especially on promotion. My CDA is an ECT as well and has been defending me pretty well. But anyway, I’m normally ripe for a promotion to AD at the next EDC. If it happens, it would be roughly 2 years after I joined. My point of view may change then ;) How long were you at BCG for?
