Open office is the worst concept ever foisted upon the corporate world by “experts.”
Open floor plans were likely designed by someone who sits in a private office 😆
But to answer the question my lowest productivity occurs in “team conference rooms” and open floor plans. You know - The client conf room designed for 4 people is typically jammed with 6 consultants and their luggage. One PPMD/SM on their cell phone blathering away to a different project/proposal team in another city while the team tries to hold a meeting to discuss a deliverable, and one other person on their cell to attend a conference call for an internal initiative.
Yeah I’m not getting anything done at that point.
Open office concepts are designed by the devil. If I’m coming into my office I’m either going to be in conference rooms all day...or I know I’m not going to get anything done.
There are a ton of studies showing this is counterproductive. Offices are only doing it now because you can get away with less space for the same number of people. Especially in consulting when we’re always traveling, why bother giving everyone their own space when you have such low occupancy
Open office was done to save real estate costs. Severe lack of tranparency in corporate America. Communicating such B.S. insults everyone's intelligence.
Bose headphones aren't just for flying...
I cant concentrate with all that commotion in a closet. I am beyond thrilled to be home in a quiet space to actually process information. However, not happy with the number of check in calls each day and the pressure to be on camera for people who NEED to see others. Takes away time I could get more work done. Hoping companies will cut down consultant travel given the down turn in the economy and realize its not necessary. How much happier would I be 🙃
I would actually be OK if they used the offices to divide the cubicles into pods of 5-10 desks. Then a team could sit and work together or at least you aren’t in an endless sea of cubicles. One thing that many don’t know is that the offices all have white noise generators in the ceilings. If they turn them off the noise from people talking is incredible. You can literally hear people from across the building.
Part of the reason I'm glad I don't have a local office, so I work from home. When I am in an area with an office, I show up, shoot the breeze with some folks and head back to the hotel.
1) Look up Susan Cain
2) Sometimes, I like to take a conference call and keep my earbuds in to block out noise and reduce disruptions.
3) The best is when a colleague will schedule a call, so we’ll be in a Skype call with our earbuds and calling it a working session.
There is a plenty of research out there found open workspace to be bad for productivity and interaction across practitioners
